Mewis on the Move

By Charlotte Stacey

American international Sam Mewis is the latest player to join ranks at Manchester City for the upcoming season.

Midfield titan, Mewis, has sealed the deal and will join the squad for their first fixtures, donning the number 22 shirt.

Mewis makes the move from National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team North Carolina Courage where she has spent the past three years. With the Courage, Mewis has won two league titles and three consecutive NWSL Shields.

Mewis’ successes however, do not stop there. She is no stranger to the international stage and has been prolific in the national team’s recent victories. A regular USWNT starter, Mewis has racked up 67 appearances and has scored 18 times for her country, including two goals that helped the US secure their World Cup win last year.

Mewis has most recently competed in the month long NWSL Challenge Cup, however with no football on the horizon for the foreseeable, Mewis is one of many NWSL players to take their talents elsewhere for the time being. However, it is thought that most of these players will have almost an “open invitation” to return to the states.

Although she will likely find herself in the starting eleven for the most part, Mewis notes the quality City already have on offer,

“the midfield is so good and so talented so I will have to earn my stripes here. Keira Walsh is one I have a lot of respect for - all the Lionesses, I know, are so good and so talented.”

"A couple of months ago my agent came to me with it and my eyes just kind of opened wide because obviously Manchester City is such a great club and is so well-known.”

"I thought it would be cool to play overseas one day and for a club like Manchester City. I feel really lucky and really fortunate to have this opportunity."

Mewis is City’s second signing thus far behind Lioness Chloe Kelly. Lionesses Lucy Bronze and Alex Greenwood also look set to join the Blues fresh off of their Coupe de France victory with Olympique Lyonnais, although these have not officially been announced yet.

Fellow USWNT teammate Rose Lavelle may also be making the journey across the pond to join Mewis at Manchester City. Rife speculation continues as it is thought that she is still heavily considering a move from NWSL side Washington Spirit.

With Mewis and Lavelle linking with Keira Walsh, Caroline Weir and Jill Scott, Manchester City will have bagged themselves a rather devilish midfield indeed.
